    Ingredients you’ll need

This avocado lime crema is so good, you won’t believe it only has 6 simple ingredients:

    • Avocados: You'll need one large ripe avocado to achieve a super buttery, creamy, and smooth texture.
    • Coriander (cilantro): Adds a bright, zesty flavor! While parsley works too, cilantro is the ideal choice when using it on tacos.
    • Greek yogurt: This imparts a delightful tang, perfect for cooling down the heat in spicy or zesty meals.
    • Salt: Essential to bring out all the flavors.
    • Lime juice: Adds brightness, acidity, and a citrusy flavor that balances the richness of yogurt and avocado.
    • Garlic: Fresh is preferable, but you can use garlic powder if that's all you have.

Complete list of ingredients and amounts is located on the recipe card below.

Ready to serve: Transfer the crema to a jar or a squeeze bottle and serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.

    Tips and tricks

    • Too thick? Mix in 1 tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.
    • Too thin? Blend in another half of an avocado or a tablespoon of yogurt at a time until you reach the desired consistency.
    • Rest: Refrigerate for a few hours or overnight to let the flavors mingle.

    Serving suggestions

On everything! This sauce is terrific on every dish where you would usually use avocados or sour cream.

Avocado and lime crema is great on top of air fryer chicken tacos, burrito bowls, baked sweet potato mushroom tacos and enchiladas, but can also be added to the inside of burritos or used as a burger sauce. Try it as your new go-to dipping sauce for lentil patties, brussels sprouts, Crispy fingerling potatoes or taquitos. The options are truly endless!

    Substitutions and variations

    • High protein: Opt for cottage cheese instead of Greek yogurt.
    • Vegan: Substitute the yogurt with plant-based vegan plain yogurt.
    • Flavour boost: Enhance the taste with ¼ to ½ teaspoon of ground cumin or ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon of cayenne for a bit of heat.
    • Make it spicy: Introduce half a deseeded jalapeño for an extra kick.

    How to store

The leftover crema will last up to 5 days in the fridge. Keep it in a sealed jar, container, or squeeze bottle.

    Recipe FAQ

    What is avocado crema?

Avocado crema is a spin on classic Mexican Crema, offering a naturally creamy and fresher alternative to sour cream by using avocados instead of buttermilk and heavy cream. The recipe is enhanced with a light balance of fresh garlic, cilantro, lime juice, and Greek yogurt for added flavour.

What does avocado crema taste like?

Avocado crema is an ultra-smooth, light, and refreshing sauce, providing a delightful contrast to heavier, richer options like hot sauce. It has tangy undertones from the yogurt and grassy notes from the avocado.

How do I ripen an avocado quickly?

To quickly ripen an avocado, place it in a paper bag with a banana or apple, or wrap it in newspaper. The ethylene gas released by these fruits accelerates the ripening process, making the avocado ready to eat in a shorter time.
