Deliciously healthy Chocolate Chip Sweet Potato Bread made with wholegrain oat flour, sweet potatoes and dark chocolate chips. A moist gluten free + vegan friendly sweet potato snack bread everybody will love!
I am so excited about this recipe today.
Reason number one, we are turning with my beloved sweet potatoes into BREAD! But not just any bread. We are making CHOCOLATE CHIP SWEET POTATO BREAD. And let me tell you, it’s fabulous!
No bananas are involved in this in this healthier sweet potato bread recipe. Instead we use steamed or roasted sweet potatoes, dark chocolate chips of choice (I love this 100% pure dark chocolate and these chocolate chips) , gluten-free oat flour, eggs/ flax eggs, honey and a little coconut oil. So simple!
Ingredients you’ll need
- Sweet potato puree: The star of the show!
- Eggs- I used organic eggs but flax eggs will also work.
- Honey or maple syrup- I used Manuka honey, but you can use your favourite sweetener.
- Vanilla extract
- Melted coconut oil
- Oat flour: Use certified gluten-free oat flour if needed. Spelt may work, but almond flour isn’t a 1:1 sub.
- Baking powder
- Cinnamon + sea salt
- Dark chocolate chips
How to cook the sweet potatoes
Before making the best healthy chocolate chip sweet potato bread, we need to cook the sweet potatoes first. Simply peel + slice a large sweet potato into small chunks and steam in a steaming basket for about 8 minutes or until tender. Alternatively, you can cook them in the microwave with a few tablespoons of water for about 4 minutes or tender.
If your pressed for time use, you can definitely use baby food sweet potato puree instead. Or better yet, roast up some extra sweet potato with your meal prep, and you’ll be ready to go!
Once cooled, mash them in a small bowl with a potato masher or puree in a food processor until smooth. Mash them really well so no chunky pieces are visible. Then measure 1 cup or 250g cooked weight.
How to make healthy chocolate chip sweet potato bread
- Preheat oven to 350F/ 180C and line a loaf pan with baking paper or non-stick spray.
- In a bowl mix together your mashed sweet potato, eggs, honey, vanilla extract and coconut oil until smooth and creamy.
- Mix in the oat flour, baking powder and cinnamon and combine well so there are no lumps.
- Fold in the chocolate chips then pour into bread dish. Sprinkle the top with extra chocolate chips and bake for 45-50 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean when you stick in centre.
- Allow to cool (if you can ha!) and voila. You’ve got yourself a deliciously chocolate chip healthy sweet potato bread ready for eating.
Can I use a different oil? Or omit the oil?
There’s a small amount of coconut oil in this recipe to keep this sweet potato snack bread moist. But if you don’t have coconut oil, you can use another liquid oil that does not have a strong flavour, such as avocado or macadamia nut oil.
To make this healthy sweet potato bread oil free, you can replace the oil that’s called for with some plain, unsweetened applesauce, mashed banana or more sweet potato puree. The loaf will end up a little less moist but still delicious.

Tried this recipe. It was super. Thanks for sharing this Caitlin.
I skipped using chocolate chips and instead of maple syrup or honey I used coconut sugar( same proportion).
My family enjoyed it.
